Yankees resume series with Tigers in the Bronx

Baseball Betting Lines

08/18/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Yankees will once again be without star third baseman Alex Rodriguez this evening when they continue their four-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium.

Rodriguez left Monday's tilt with a lower leg injury and an MRI on Tuesday revealed a low level calf strain that could keep him out the rest of the week.

"I've never had a calf injury," Rodriguez said. "But the doc says it's good news. It's day to day, and we'll just go from there."

The Yankees did not skip a beat without the three-time American League Most Valuable Player on Tuesday, as CC Sabathia struck out nine over seven strong innings to pick up his American League-leading 16th win, helping New York to a 6-2 win.

Robinson Cano and former Tiger Curtis Granderson each hit a solo homer for the Yankees, who had scored a total of one run over their last two games, both defeats.

Sabathia (16-5) allowed five hits and two runs, while walking three batters. The powerful southpaw won his third straight start as the Yankees remained tied with Tampa Bay for first place in the AL East. The Rays pounded Texas on Tuesday.

Justin Verlander (13-8) was charged with five hits and three runs over five innings and lost for the third time in his last four decisions.

Heading to the hill for the Yankees tonight will be righty Dustin Moseley, who is 2-2 with a 4.41 ERA. Moseley absorbed the loss on Friday in Kansas City, as the Royals reached him for four runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 frames.

Moseley has faced the Tigers five times (two starts) and is 1-0 against them with a 4.85 ERA.

Detroit, meanwhile, will counter with right-hander Jeremy Bonderman, who has lost his last two starts. Bonderman's latest setback came on Friday in Chicago, as the White Sox pounded him for six runs and seven hits in six innings, dropping him to 6-8 to go along with a 5.16 ERA.

Bonderman lost to the Yanks back on May 12 and is just 3-8 in 13 games (12 starts) against them with a 5.29 ERA.

Detroit has won four of its six meetings with the Yankees this season.

What Is the Point Spread?

What are Sports Betting Point Spreads?

In any football or basketball game (the main sports that use point spreads) there are two teams playing against each other.

Those teams, though, are rarely exactly evenly matched – meaning that typically one team has a better chance than the other to win the game. If bettors were allowed to bet on who was simply going to win the game, smart ones would obviously bet on the better team (likely winning more than 50% of the time in the process).

If winning were that easy the Las Vegas and online sportsbooks would stop taking any bets! This is where the point spread comes in: the basic function of the point spread is to balance the likelihood of each team “winning” by adjusting the final score by the point spread. After this adjustment is made you get the Against The Spread result (ATS result for short).

Let’s look at Super Bowl XXXIX, New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Most people believed the defending champ Patriots to be the better team – so if betting were simply based upon which team would win the game, an uneven majority of people would have wagered on New England. But, by using the point spread, the bookmakers adjusted the terms of the bet, evening the proposition so about half the people believed the Pats to be the smart bet, while the other half considered Philly to be the smart bet.

How to Read Point Spreads

New England Patriots -7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The better team, called the Favorite, is expected to win the game and must “give” or “lay” points to the weaker team. The favorite is listed with a minus sign and the number of points they are favored by (e.g., New England -7)

In the case of our example, New England must not only win the game, but they must win by more than 7 points for Pats bettors to have a winning ATS result. An Eagles bettor wins his bet either if:
