Top-ranked Tar Heels bring act to Reno for clash with Wolf Pack

North Carolina has won its first 12 games to open the 2008-09 campaign, and each victory has come by at least 15 points. The Tar Heels are fresh off a 97-75 triumph over Rutgers on Sunday, and they have beaten the likes of Kentucky, Notre Dame, Oregon and Michigan State thus far. While there will be many challenge when ACC play begins, UNC will be favored in every contest and is the clear favorite to win the national title under the guidance of head coach Roy Williams.

Nevada has won four of its last five games to improve to 7-5 overall. On Saturday, the club knocked off Idaho State by a 68-63 final, but the level of competition increases exponentially today. Clearly, the Wolf Pack has yet to play a team that even approaches UNC's level of ability.

The Tar Heels have won all three previous meetings with Nevada, including a 106-70 romp over the Wolf Pack a year ago.

North Carolina is truly explosive at the offensive end of the court, as the team has five active double-digit scorers in the fold and is averaging a gaudy 95.8 ppg on 51.1 percent shooting from the field. The Tar Heels have played extremely well at the defensive end as well, holding foes to 69.0 ppg on 40.2 percent field goal efficiency. Reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough is generating 23.1 ppg while ripping down 7.5 rpg for UNC, and he recently became the leading scorer in the history of the program. Dynamic point guard Ty Lawson is scoring 16.0 ppg, and he has dished out 79 assists against only 15 turnovers. Deon Thompson checks in with 13.4 ppg and 7.1 rpg, while Danny Green provides 13.4 ppg. Wayne Ellington (12.3 ppg) rounds out the starters, and he is a dangerous perimeter shooter. Hansbrough dominated the post against Rutgers to the tune of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Lawson added 19 points and six assists, while Green tallied 18 points. The Heels connected on 51.5 percent of their field goal attempts and went 23-of-28 from the foul line. A 40-26 rebounding advantage contributed to the victory as well.

Nevada is scoring 69.9 ppg this season while allowing 62.7 ppg to opponents on 40.5 percent shooting from the floor. Armon Johnson leads the Wolf Pack with 15.0 ppg, and he is also tops with 53 assists. Luke Babbitt checks in with 14.9 ppg and 7.2 rpg, as he is the only other double-digit scorer on the roster. In the five-point win over Idaho State on Saturday, Babbitt scored 16 points on the strength of an 8-of-8 showing from the foul line. Malik Cook tallied 15 points, and Brandon Fields pitched in 12 points. Nevada was fortunate to overcome its 37.5 percent shooting from the floor, including a 3- of-16 effort from the foul line. The Wolf Pack only committed eight turnovers in 40 minutes of action and earned a 37-30 rebounding advantage as well. A 23-16 edge in points from the foul line helped the cause.
